Hospitals in Western Mass: How Far Is the Nearest One From Your Town

Ten acute care hospitals serve 101 towns. From some of them the drive is long enough that it belongs in a buying decision rather than an afterthought.

Pittsfield, where Berkshire Medical Center sits

This is not a question most buyers ask, and it is one a good many wish they had. Ten acute care hospitals serve the 101 towns of Western Massachusetts. From the middle of the region that is fine. From the hill towns it is a genuine consideration, and it becomes a larger one every decade you own the house.

In the median town, the nearest emergency department is a 19 minute drive. From Middlefield it is 43 minutes to Pittsfield. 16 towns are more than half an hour out.

10 hospitals, 1,899 beds, 101 townsEvery one has an emergency department. Between them they cover an area you would not drive across in two hours.

Where They Are

The ten hospitals sit in 9 towns, and the distribution follows the population rather than the geography:

  • Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, 746 beds (Level 1 trauma centre)
  • Berkshire Medical Center, Pittsfield, 298 beds (Level 3 trauma centre)
  • Mercy Medical Center, Springfield, 251 beds
  • Holyoke Medical Center, Holyoke, 219 beds
  • Cooley Dickinson Hospital, Northampton, 140 beds
  • Baystate Franklin Medical Center, Greenfield, 89 beds
  • Baystate Noble Hospital, Westfield, 85 beds
  • Baystate Wing Hospital, Palmer, 28 beds
  • Fairview Hospital, Great Barrington, 25 beds
  • North Adams, North Adams, 18 beds

Baystate Medical Center in Springfield is the region's only Level 1 trauma centre, which is the designation that matters for a major injury. Everything serious in this region ends up there, and for most of the Berkshires that is a long way.

Note the bed counts. Several of these are small community hospitals with a few dozen beds. They have an emergency department, which is the thing that matters at two in the morning, but the range of what they treat differs enormously from the large valley hospitals.

What This Number Is And Is Not

It is how long it takes you to drive to an emergency department, in normal conditions, from the middle of your town.

It is emphatically not an ambulance response time. An ambulance comes from a local station, not from the hospital, and in most of these towns that station is a great deal closer than the hospital is. Response times here depend on whether the service is full-time or on call, which is a question for the town rather than for any dataset we hold.

The drive itself is also a free-flow estimate with no traffic and, more importantly for this region, no weather. A thirty-five minute drive over high ground in February is not a thirty-five minute drive, and the towns furthest from a hospital are the same towns that get the most snow.

One town's routing data is not credible and is shown as no record rather than as a figure we do not believe. Its nearest neighbouring town computes at more than double the regional median of 11 minutes, which indicates the router could not find the normal way out rather than that the town is remote. We would rather print nothing than print that.

When This Should Actually Change Your Mind

For most buyers, it should not. A twenty-five minute drive to a hospital is unremarkable across most of rural America and this region is well served by the standards of anywhere comparable.

It matters in four situations, and they are worth being honest about because they arrive gradually:

  1. If you are buying somewhere to grow old. The drive that is fine at fifty-five is a different proposition at eighty, particularly once you are no longer the one driving. This is the single most common regret we would expect from the bottom of that table.
  2. If someone in the household has a chronic condition requiring regular treatment. Dialysis or oncology is not one drive, it is two or three a week for years.
  3. If you are planning a family. Not every hospital on that list delivers babies, and the ones that do have changed over the past decade as small maternity units closed.
  4. If winter access to your road is uncertain. A long drive plus an unplowed private way is a different risk from a long drive alone, and the snowfall varies more across this region than most people expect.

Two things worth checking alongside this that no dataset will tell you. Whether the town's ambulance service is full-time or on call, which the town office will answer directly. And whether the property is on a public way or a private road, because plowing responsibility in February is the difference between a long drive and no drive. Neither appears on a listing, and in most of this region there is no alternative to driving in any case.
