The all-time peak: $4,706 in the week of 2022-11-07. The heat-pump line has sat below the oil line almost continuously since it begins, the spread is what a switch saves in running cost, and your town's heating page works it at today's prices with the tipping point for your own electric rate.

How the Index Is Made
An index, not a bill: nobody buys 800 gallons in one week. Each point prices a typical season: 800 gallons of oil at that week's New England average, as if locked at that week's price, which is what makes 1990 and this week comparable. The heat-pump line delivers the same useful heat (federal energy content, 85% burner efficiency) through a cold-climate heat pump at a seasonal efficiency of 2.5, priced at that month's Massachusetts residential electricity average, light-plant towns run cheaper.
