Right now, in the week of March 30, 2026, heating a typical Western Massachusetts house for a full season costs $4,462 with oil and $3,335 with an air-source heat pump. The heat pump wins by $1,127, which is the widest margin in a record going back to 2001.
That is a genuinely useful number and it is also the single most misleading number in this article, because anyone who read the same comparison in 2015 got the opposite answer and was equally right at the time.
The advice has reversed, repeatedly
Across 646 weeks where both fuels can be priced, oil came out cheaper in 297 of them, which is 46% of the record. The two have swapped places 31 separate times.
This is not noise around a trend. It is two commodity markets moving independently. Heating oil tracks global crude, which does what global crude does. Electricity in New England tracks natural gas generation and regional grid costs, which move on an entirely different clock. When crude spikes, oil loses. When winter gas constraints hit New England hard, electricity loses. Neither is reliably the cheap one, and any article telling you otherwise without a date on it is telling you about one week.

The peak was the week of November 7, 2022, when a season of oil ran $4,706. In 1990 the same season cost $1,045. Oil was under a dollar a gallon within living memory of most people reading this.
What the comparison actually assumes
Every figure above rests on assumptions, and you should know them before you make a decision with five-figure consequences.
- A typical house, not your house. The season is modelled on standard consumption for a detached single-family home in this climate. A draughty 1890 farmhouse burns far more; a tight new build far less.
- A modern heat pump in a New England winter. Cold-climate units hold usable efficiency well below freezing, which older ones did not. If you are pricing a unit from 2009, this comparison does not describe it.
- Running cost only. Not the installation, which for a whole-house heat pump retrofit is a five-figure job, and not the rebates, which change the arithmetic substantially and change with them.
- Regional fuel prices. Oil and propane are New England averages. A delivery contract, a pre-buy or a cap can put you well off that number in either direction.
What most homes here actually burn
The choice is not always available. Sixty-two of the 101 towns in Western Massachusetts have no natural gas main at all, which takes the cheapest fossil option off the table for most of the region and is why delivered oil and propane remain so common here long after they became unusual elsewhere.

So what should you actually do
If you are replacing a dead boiler this winter, the current spread of $1,127 a season is real money and it favours the heat pump. If you are choosing between towns, or between houses, the running cost matters far less than the building: insulation, air sealing and window condition swing the annual figure by more than the fuel choice does, and they are the one variable you control permanently.
And if somebody quotes you a single number for what heating costs around here, ask them which week they got it from. Across 646 weeks of record, that answer has changed hands 31 times.
