The nearest Western Massachusetts town to Boston is 82 minutes away, measured on the road network with no traffic on it. That figure is the fantasy version. Anyone who has driven the Massachusetts Turnpike eastbound at seven in the morning knows what the real one looks like.

The arithmetic that makes people try it

The median single-family home in the towns on this list is a fraction of what the same house costs inside Route 128, and the annual property tax on it is frequently lower in absolute terms as well. For a household that only needs to be in the office twice a week, the trade is obvious and the money is substantial.

Where it goes wrong is when the hybrid arrangement ends. A three-day return-to-office mandate turns a clever housing decision into a four-hour daily commitment, and the house cannot be moved. If you are pricing this trade, price it at the office attendance you might be required to do, not the one you currently have.
